Most top musical artists are constantly striving for more — more releases, more tour dates, more viral moments and more interactions with fans. But one of the biggest musical acts today has found success in scarcity.
SZA, also known as Solána Imani Rowe, the New Jersey R&B singer, took more than five years off between her first album, “Ctrl,” and her sophomore release, “SOS,” which dropped in early December. Fans not only didn’t give up on SZA, but they can’t stop listening to her new work.
“SOS” has dominated the Billboard 200 chart for 10 non-consecutive weeks. A run for that long is highly unusual; it’s one of only eight albums to top the chart for at least that many weeks. In January, she sold the equivalent of nearly 560,000 albums in the US, trailing only Taylor Swift. On Spotify, SZA generated some 425 million streams around the world in January.
The album, which largely centers on love, expands her sound, pushing her into folksy ballad territory with “Nobody Gets Me,” which retells the story of a failed relationship. Her most popular track, the dreamy “Kill Bill,” revolves around a bittersweet revenge fantasy about slaying an ex-boyfriend.
There’s reason to think SZA will continue to remain at the top of the charts. Though “Ctrl” never hit No. 1, it has remained in the Billboard Top 200 for more than five years. In March, she’ll begin her arena tour. Resale tickets are going for hundreds of dollars for the cheapest seats. Meanwhile, she’s planning to release an expanded version of “SOS,” which will feature 10 additional tracks.
After a SZA shortage, fans now can’t get enough.
